Abstract:

Introduction: This study was carried out to compare two retrograde filling materials entitled mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Root MTA (RMTA) in regard to their marginal adaptation and surface defects. Method: In this study twenty extracted human teeth were used. In all teeth after cleaning and shaping, the root canals were obturated by gutta-percha and root canal sealer. After that in each tooth the 3 millimeter of root end was resected and a retrograde cavity was prepared. Then, the teeth were randomly divided into two experimental groups. In group I the retrograde cavities were filled by MTA and in group II the cavities were filled by RMTA. Then using Confocalmicroscope and stereomicroscope the location of the gaps between filling material and cavity walls was determined and measured by Autocad and Photoshop soft wares. Finally the obtained data were analyzed by One sided Fisher’s exact test. Results: There was a significant difference in marginal adaptation between two types of MTA (p<0.029). ٍOnly one tooth, in MTA group showed gap between cavity walls and root-end filling material, however, 60% of the teeth in RMTA group showed gap in their margins. In regard to surface defect there was a significant difference between the two groups (p=0.016). In MTA group 50% of the cases showed a defect on their surface, while in the RMTA group except one case, none of the cavities showed surface defect. Conclusion: It can be concluded that MTA has better marginal adaptation than RMTA.

Cytotoxicity and Initial Biocompatibility of Endodontic Biomaterials (MTA and Biodentine™) Used as Root-End Filling Materials

Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and cellular adhesion of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine (BD) on periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDL). Methods. PDL cells were obtained from nonerupted third molars and cultured; MTS cellular profusion test was carried out in two groups: MTA and BD, with respective controls at different time periods. Also, the L...

Microbial leakage of MTA, Portland cement, Sealapex and zinc oxide-eugenol as root-end filling materials.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the microbial leakage of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Portland cement (PC), Sealapex and zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) as root-end filling materials. STUDY DESIGN An in vitro microbial leakage test (MLT) with a split chamber was used in this study. A mixture of facultative bacteria and one yeast (S. aureus+E. faecalis+P. aeruginosa+B. subtilis+C....

Sealing ability of MTA, Super EBA, Vitremer and amalgam as root-end filling materials.

This study evaluated the root-end sealing ability of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA Angelus), reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol cement (Super EBA), resin-modified glass ionomer (Vitremer) and zinc-free amalgam (GS-80) (control). The root canals of eighty human lower molars were accessed, cleansed, shaped and obturated. Apexes were resected and cavities were prepared. Teeth were divided into 4 grou...

Root-end filling materials: apical microleakage and marginal adaptation.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the root-end sealing ability through dye leakage evaluation and the marginal adaptation through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of some root-end filling materials. Thirty human uniradicular teeth were used. Teeth were divided into three groups: (1) retrofilled with MTA-Angelus, (2) with SuperEBA, and (3) with Vitremer. The root surfaces were isolated...
